James Brooks
American painter James Brooks was born in 1906. He began his career as a Social Realist and later became an Abstract Expressionist. He is best known for his murals, abstract paintings, and unique staining techniques. From 1936 to 1942, Brooks worked for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Federal Art Project in New York. During this period, he created many public murals, including Flight at LaGuardia Airport. During WWII, he served as a combat artist in Egypt and in the Near East, where he continued his realist depictions. When Brooks returned to America, he reconnected with fellow WPA artists, including Philip Guston, Jackson Pollock, and Bradley Walker Tomlin. At this point, he began to concentrate on abstraction and developed his signature staining technique or painterly accidents, which were influenced by Pollock’s action paintings. James Brooks, muralist and abstract painter, was born on October 18, 1906, in St. Louis, Missouri, one of four children of William Rodolphus and Abigail F. (Williamson) Brooks. His father was a traveling salesman, and the Brooks family moved frequently until 1916, when they settled in Dallas. Following his graduation from Oak Cliff High School in 1922 Brooks studied art at Southern Methodist University for two years. He then studied with James A. Waddell at the Dallas Art Instituteqv and took private lessons with Martha Simkins.qv In 1926 he moved to New York City, where he worked as a commercial artist to fund his night classes with Boardman Robinson and Kimon Nicolaides at the Art Students League.

James Brooks (October 18, 1906 – March 9, 1992) was an American muralist, abstract painter and winner of the Logan Medal of the Arts. Brooks was a friend of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner on Eastern Long Island.
In 1947 he married artist Charlotte Park. Considered a first generation abstract
expressionist painter, Brooks was amongst the first abstract expressionists to use staining as an important technique.
