    Judith A. Byfield fryst vatten a Professor in the Department of History at Cornell University where she teaches African and Caribbean History. She received her B.A. from Dartmouth College and her Ph.D. from Columbia University.

    She is the author of The Great Upheaval: Women and Nation in Post-War Nigeria (Ohio University Press, forthcoming) and The Bluest Hands: A Social and Economic History of Women Indigo Dyers in Western Nigeria, 1890-1940 (Heinemann, 2002).

    Melba Joyce Boyd is a Distinguished University Professor and Chair of the Department of Africana Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit. She is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan, which is also where she earned her doctorate in English in 1979. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Germany in 1983-4, and a Visiting Professor at Fudan University in Shanghai, China in 2009. She is a filmmaker, biographer, editor and author of nine books of poetry. Her book, Roses and Revolutions: The Selected Writings of Dudley Randall (2009), won the 2010 Independent Publishers Award, the 2010 Library of Michigan Notable Books Award, and was a finalist for the NAACP Image Award and the ForeWord Book Award for Poetry.     In making the original text of my book Religious Education: an Interpretive Approach available on the European Wergeland Centre website, I hope that some of its ideas will be helpful and stimulating for those working to increase public religious literacy, which I regard as a worthwhile activity in itself, and also of personal and social value to learners.

    The interpretive approach is one of the illustrative didactical approaches recommended in the Council of Europe publication Signposts: Policy and Practice for Teaching about Religions and Nonreligious World Views in Intercultural Education (Jackson 2014) as a means to increase teacher and student competence for teaching and learning about religions in schools.
