With the sad news that Elgin Baylor passed away this week at age 86, I thought it would be nice to take portion of my dissertation where Baylor was given some shine. The story about Baylor is well known, as far as the s NBA is concerned, but it’s worth retelling. I’m also including some of the dissertation that leads up to Baylor’s protest. Helps provide better context for what it was like being a Black player in the NBA at the time.

CHILDHOOD AND EARLY LIFE
Considered as one of Basketball’s all-time great, American Basketball player, coach and executiveElgin Gay Baylor was born on September 16, , in Washington, District of Columbia, United States of America. Following the footsteps of his two basketball player brothers, Elgin began playing the game early in his life. While attending the Phelps Vocational High School, he regularly played for the school basketball grupp in the and basketball seasons. He temporarily abandoned his study and dropped out of school during due to his poor academic performance and went on to work for a furniture store. He continued playing basketball in the local recreational leagues.
In , Elgin Baylor resumed his study after enrolling at the recently started Spingarn High School. He played the season appearing for his latest school and was awarded the SSA's Livingstone Trophy as the Area's Best Basketball player.
