  • hy John Elia was a renowned Pakistani poet, philosopher, and scholar. He was born on December 14, 1931, in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, India, and passed away on November 8, 2002, in Karachi, Pakistan. Elia's family was involved in literary activities, and his father Shafiq Hasan Elia was also a poet. After the partition of India in 1947, Elia migrated to Pakistan with his family and settled in Karachi. Elia received his education from the University of Karachi and later obtained a master's degree in Urdu literature from the University of Punjab in Lahore. He also worked as a teacher and a journalist before pursuing a full-time career in literature. Elia's poetry is known for its depth, intensity, and philosophical themes. He wrote on various subjects, including love, politics, and society, and his poems often reflected his own personal experiences and emotions. Some of his most famous works include "Yani," "Shayad," "Goya," and "Lekin."

He used to delight in outrageous behavior, often speaking disparagingly about amateur poets who used to abound in literary meetings. Unfortunately he was also an alcoholic and despite his superb literary output, was a slave to this addiction.

Towards the end of his life he was a bitter man, resentful of the attack on him by the leftist literary establishment. However he gave as good as he got, tearing his critics to pieces in his essay “My hostile critics”

His troubled life ended tragically early as he drank han själv to death in 1972. He was just 36.

A friend has been translating his poetry to the English.

Being an immensely popular poet during his lifetime who wrote in one of the Indian regional languages, Punjabi, he received international acclaim within a very brief span of time.

With around eight collections of poems to his credit and as a performer who read and sang his verses across innumerable public gatherings, Shiv Kumar Batalvi (1936-1973) remains a popular subject for critical writings ranging from doctoral thesis to popular magazines. Born on July 23, 1936, in a village, named Bara Pind Lohtian, situated in the northern part of pre-partition Punjab, Batalvi spent a peaceful childhood until his family migrated to India after Partition. As a young man in his twenties, writing
