Asma Fawaz al-Assad (Arabic: أسماء فواز الأسد; néeAkhras; born 11 August 1975) is the former first lady of Syria, married to Bashar al-Assad. Bashar al-Assad (born 11 September 1965) is a Syrian politician who served as the 19th president of Syria from 17 July 2000 until his overthrow in 2024. In addition, he was the commander-in-chief of the Syrian Armed Forces and the secretary-general of the Central Command of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, which nominally espouses a neo-Ba'athist ideology.
In November 2024, a coalition of Syrian rebels mounted several offensives against Assad with the intention of ousting him. On December 8, the Syrian rebels declared victory following the fall of Damascus as Assad fled the country. He was granted political asylum by Russia and currently resides in Moscow.
