    Asma Fawaz al-Assad (Arabic: أسماء فواز الأسد; néeAkhras; born 11 August 1975) is the former first lady of Syria, married to Bashar al-Assad.     Bashar al-Assad (born 11 September 1965) is a Syrian politician who served as the 19th president of Syria from 17 July 2000 until his overthrow in 2024. In addition, he was the commander-in-chief of the Syrian Armed Forces and the secretary-general of the Central Command of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, which nominally espouses a neo-Ba'athist ideology.

    In November 2024, a coalition of Syrian rebels mounted several offensives against Assad with the intention of ousting him.
