Susan Hayward was born Edythe Marrener in Brooklyn, New York, on June 30, Her father was a transportation worker, and Susan lived a fairly comfortable life as a child, but the precocious little redhead had no idea of the life that awaited her. She attended public school in Brooklyn, where she graduated from a commercial high school that was intended to give students a marketable skill. She had planned on becoming a sekreterare, but her plans changed. She started doing some modeling work for photographers in the NYC area. By , her beauty in full bloom, she went to Hollywood when the nationwide search was on for someone to play the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind (). Although she--along with several hundred other aspiring Scarletts--lost out to Vivien Leigh, Susan was to carve her own signature in Hollywood circles. In she got a bit part in Hollywood Hotel (). Susan Hayward was one of Hollywood&#;s most successful film stars from the late s through the early s. Although a native of New York, she spent much of her later life in Georgia on a farm near Carrollton.
Born Edythe Marrenner on June 30, , in Brooklyn, New York, Hayward began her career as a model while in her late teens. When the search for an actress to play Scarlett O&#;Hara in Gone With the Wind began in , producer David O. Selznick brought Marrenner to Hollywood, California, to audition for the part. Although she did not win the role, her audition paved the way for other acting opportunities. She was put under contract to Warner Brothers and changed her name to Susan Hayward.
Most of her early film assignments were small supporting roles or larger roles in B movies. In she made a strong impression as a fiery southern belle in Cecil B. DeMille&#;s Reap the Wild Wind, but it wasn&#;t until the late s that she emerged as a star.
