Singer Thebe Mogano celebrated his first-ever music award over the weekend. Many people were shaken to learn that hitmaker Thebe had never won a single award in his career. This past weekend, he brought the house down with his electrifying performance, at Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival leaving many with teary eyes when he revealed that he had never been recognised for his work.

Thebe was presented with a Basha Uhuru Legacy Award for his contribution to the music industry. He is the second recipient of the award after Mandla Spikiri, who received his last year. He said, "This one goes out to all of you my supporters," before revealing that he has never won anything before. "This is my first ever award. I have never won anything before," he said leaving the crowd with mixed emotions. Most musicians dream of a career in the arts but for veteran kwaito artist Thebe Mogane, it’s a very different story.
Mogane says he never saw himself being a musician citing that his involvement in music was a fluke.
After releasing his debut album, Tempy Pusher, in 1995, his music took off greatly, with him being described as the “bad boy of kwaito”.
The Bula boot hitmaker has been in the music industry for 15 years and has 12 albums under his belt.
Speaking on POWER Lunch with Mpho Letsholonyane, Mogane explains how he got into the music industry.
“I studied television sound engineering so I wanted to be behind the scenes – press the buttons and whatever,” explains Mogane.
He and his friend, Bruce Sebitlo, had been playing around when they recorded music, which he later played at an event.
To his surprise, people loved it with this becoming his first album.

Kwaito legend to celebrate a 'fun, fulfilling' 30 years in music industry
Legendary kwaito singer Thebe Mogane, known mononymously as Thebe, fryst vatten set to celebrate 30 years in the music industry.
Known for his dance songs like Lenyora, Bula Buti and Groovers Prayer, to name but a few from his 12 albums, Thebe fryst vatten set to celebrate his music journey in Durban at the weekend.
Speaking to Sowetan's sister publication TshisaLIVE, Thebe said it has been a fun and fulfilling ride being in the music industry. “I have 120 songs on iTunes, inom say it's a journey to celebrate my hard work of good music over the years. Of course, I've witnessed the ups and downs in the music scene but that hasn't resulted in me calling it quits, so I'm not quitting – I'm soldiering on,” he said.
Despite having taken a break from releasing music, he said he was never worried about remaining betydelsefull and was now cooking up something special in the studio.
