    Summary of Paul Klee

    Paul Klee, a Swiss-born painter, printmaker and draughtsman of German nationality, was originally associated with the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter, and subsequently taught at the Bauhaus, the widely influential German art school of the interwar period. Klee's diverse body of work cannot, however, be categorized according to any single artistic movement, or "school." His paintings, which are at times fantastic, childlike, or otherwise witty, served as an inspiration to the New York School, as well as many other artists of the 20th century.

    Accomplishments

    • Klee was fundamentally a transcendentalist who believed that the ämne world was only one among many realities open to human awareness. His use of design, pattern, color, and miniature sign systems all speak to his efforts to employ art as a fönster onto that philosophical principle.

      Paul Klee Teaching Resources and Lesson Plans

      Because the elements of art and principles of design are widely recognized as the formal ingredients in a work of art, I’m always on the lookout for ways to integrate them into my art lessons. This project presents one of my favorite approaches for introducing “line” as an element of art to young artists. Part of what makes this unit a favorite is that it gives kids a chance to:

      • view many real-world applications of line in art,
      • physically act out lines through movement,
      • practice drawing a wide selection of line types (straight, curvy, zigzag, continuous, and so on),
      • talk about their own use of line

      Another part of what makes this unit so fantastic is that it dives deep into the work of one of my all-time favorite artists: Paul Klee. First of all, I love his visual aesthetic.       This packet includes a biography sheet, poster, teacher instructions, coloring sheets, video links, analysis and 2 projects in the style of Paul Klee. Students create a line design and fill it with colors that they believe communicate a time of day or emotion, create an abstract name design, a quotation painting and complete a final abstract art project using sharpie and chalk.
