He was born in New York City. Married Anita Melnick, (divorced), 3 children (Ted, Mark, Richard); married Mary Vann Finley, (divorced), 1 stepdaughter (Amanda); married Dragica Dimitrijevic, During World War II he served in the US Navy, and then took a university degree, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. A few months of teaching in high school were followed by a job in a literary agency in New York. He describes himself at this time as "fiercely ambitious", doing a full day's work in the agency and spending all his nights and weekends writing. His first success, published under the name Evan Hunter, was THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE () -- a tough novel of New York life, about an idealistic teacher in a slum high school. One of the first pseudonyms and from the adopted legal name of US author born Salvatore Albert Lombino (), who ultimately became better known as Ed McBain, beneath which byline he wrote at least over fifty laconic police procedurals as well as some action-detections in the John D MacDonald mould. All in all, Hunter/McBain published about books. As Hunter he is most famous for novels like The Blackboard Jungle () and Strangers When We Meet (); his later career had little to do with sf, most of his work in the genre having appeared in the s as S A Lombino (seven stories ), and as by D A Addams, Hunt Collins, Dean Hudson and Richard Marsten. This early output included a number of magazine sf stories beginning with "Reaching for the Moon" in Science Fiction Quarterly for November as by S A Lombino – some of these were assembled in The Jungle Kids (coll ; rev vt The gods Spin and Other Stories) and Happy New Year, Herbie
