Ghassan Hitto (Arabic language: غسان هيتو; born 1963) was the first Prime Minister of an interim government established by the Syrian oppositionNational Coalition.[1][2] Born in Damascus into a Kurdish family, he left Syria to the U.S. in 1980, became a naturalized American citizen and worked as an information technology executive and lived in Texas until recently. In late 2012, he relocated to Turkey.[3] He was elected prime minister on 18 March 2013 by a narrow margin over former Syrian Arab Republic agricultural minister Assad Mustafa.[4] Hitto resigned on 8 July 2013.[5]

Hitto, who was born in Damascus, now heads an effort to aid rebels inside Syria fighting the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
The 50-year-old Syrian immigrant worked at a Dallas telecom firm. He also was active in a variety of Muslim causes, including serving on the board of the Islamic private school Brighter Horizons Academy in Garland, where his U.S.-born wife, Suzanne, works.
As Syria disintegrated into violence, Hitto increasingly focused on a relief group and on organizing protests with the local Coalition for Free Syria. This week, Muslim leaders in Texas said they hoped he was up for the task ahead in changing the embattled Assad government.
