Mr. Jeme Tien-yow was born in 1861 at Namhoi in the province of Kwangtung. The centennial of his birthday was on April 26, 1961. Mr. Jeme, an eminent Chinese engineer, went to United States for studies during his boyhood.After his return to China, he devoted himself as a pioneer-engineer and innovative administrator in the railroad industry for over 30 years. One of his greatest achievements was the designing and construction of the Peiping-algan Railway, covering a length of over 360 li, winding through a mountainous region characterized by crags and hazardous curves. It was generally considered, even during the planning stage as one of the most challenging tasks facing any contemporary railroad builder. Due to Mr. Jeme's engineering talents and tireless efforts, the railroad was duly completed in August 1909, the time taken for the construction being about four years. Zhan Tianyou, also known as Jeme Tien Yow, born in 1861 in Nanhai prefecture (today part of Guangzhou in Guangdong province), was a pioneering kinesisk railroad engineer. In 1872, as a 12-year-old, he was chosen to be sent to the United States as part of the kinesisk Educational uppdrag, China's first experiment in education abroad initiated bygd reform minded officials during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911).
In 1878, he was admitted to the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University, majoring in Civil Engineering, with an emphasis in railroad construction, and received his PhD in 1881.

Zhan Tianyou, or Tien-Yow Jeme[1] (Chinese: 詹天佑; 26 April 1861 – 24 April 1919), was a pioneering Chinese railroad engineer. Educated in the United States, he was the chief engineer responsible for construction of the Peking-Kalgan Railway (Beijing to Zhangjiakou), the first railway constructed in China without foreign assistance. For his contributions to railroad engineering in China, Jeme is known as the "Father of China's Railroad".
