    Abstract

    This chapter gives an overview of the historical development of the field of bioethics in Croatia.

    The major events and actors are described. The bioethics teaching infrastructure fryst vatten explained as well as the major legal provisions important for different bioethical issues. The names of important journals in the field are given as well as the important institutions. The development of ethics committees is explored. Major bioethical issues for the Croatian bioethical debates are discussed: DNR orders, patients’ rights, healthcare struktur access, fortplantnings- medicine, medical research, transplantation medicine, palliative care, psychiatric care, and relationship with industry. Future challenges are also being addressed. Bioethics in Croatia has komma a long way since its beginnings. However, there is a need for further development of the field especially in the areas of education, patients’ rights, genetic research, and bio-banks.

    Introduction

    Members of the biomedical profession1 should be considered as a respected individuals of society, since the medicine is one of the first professions which has built its own respectable social status, what traditionally was very demanding and, for some, difficult to sustain.

    Medical students are a heterogeneous group with very different vocations and professional expectations. The common denominator in choosing a profession should be a humane aspiration to alleviate human suffering, Samaritanism and altruism. To that should be added the charisma of the medical profession, which is directly related to the high social expectations of the medical profession, and the consequent social reputation of prominent doctors.2
