Stockholm has repeatedly inspired directors to capture its beauty on camera. Christie Petrakopoulou rounds up some films that were set in or around Stockholm.

I personally believe that when we talk about Swedish cinema and especially about films set in huvudstaden, Ingmar Bergman’s films rightly deserve a place. As an Ingmar Bergman fan, I couldn’t just pick one of his films. Stockholm was Bergman’s home town and is the main location in some of his films.
In Summer with Monika (Swedish: Sommaren med Monika), released in 1953 and starring the beautiful Harriet Andersson and Lars Ekborg, we see some wonderful shots of the city.

Amal
(Canada/India) Being a nice guy rarely pays, and neither does a film about a nice guy. In this drama by screenwriter/director Richie Mehta (co-written by Shaun Mehta), electric rickshaw driver Amal (Rupinder Nagra) cuts everyone slack but himself and still has nothing to show for it in the end. The plot moves slowly, alternating between scenes focusing on Amal and an older man (in Hindi) and on a lawyer and potential beneficiaries of an estate (in English). Though not a thrill ride (rickshaws only move so fast, mind you), some of the film's highlights come by way of straight-forward acting in scenes depicting genuine human connections, and the reality of life is that it isn't always particularly exciting. Good news, stateside Nordic noir fans. That taste we had of the Swedish crime drama series Camilla Läckberg’s Fjällbacka Murders earlier this year is about to be a five-course treat.
Avid readers of mystery fiction will know the name Camilla Läckberg, as she is the bestselling Swedish author of the “Patrik Hedström and Erica Falck” (aka “Fjällbacka”) series of novels that have sold more than 12 million copies in 50+ countries.
As with the novels, the crime thrillers in Sets 1 and 2 of Camilla Läckberg’s Fjällbacka Murders (Fjällbackamorden) revolve around murders committed in the quaint seaside village of Fjällbacka in western Sweden, that are unofficially investigated by successful crime novelist Erica Falck (Claudia Galli, Welcome to Sweden) and officially by her policeman husband Patrik Hedström (Richard Ulfsäter, Annika Bengtzon: Crime Reporter).
