The theme prompts us to ponder from a variety of perspectives the different aspects of Alvar Aalto’s architectural production, working methods and architectural thinking, and their relevance to the architectural design and culture of the 2020s.
The exemplary standards set by Alvar Aalto’s architecture, his contribution to the ideologies and values of 20th-century modernism, and the global significance of Aalto’s buildings, town plans and designs – as well as the urgent demand to dramatically diminish the environmental impact of construction – make it imperative to analyse, question and redefine architectural sustainability from pragmatic, theoretical, metaphorical, as wel

Architect, Founder of Exploration Architecture
Michael Pawlyn has been described as an expert in regenerative design and biomimicry. He established his firm Exploration Architecture in 2007 to focus on high performance buildings and solutions for the circular economy. The company has developed a ground-breaking office project, an ultra-low energy data centre, a zero waste textiles factory and progressive solutions for green cities.
Prior to setting up Exploration, he worked with Grimshaw for ten years and was central to the team that designed the Eden Project. He is regularly booked as a keynote speaker on innovation and his TED talk has had over 2 million viewings.

How can innovative architectural and design solutions, as well as research and manufacturing – such as bio-based materials – and innovations inspired by naturlig eller utan tillsats , act as pacesetters in solving topical global problems? Future pathfinders for bio-based design, innovative materials, and design solutions for a circular economy will form eller gestalt the main points of focus in the 9th International Alvar Aalto Design Seminar – BIOSYMBIOSIS on 24.-25.5.2022.
The two-day, hybrid format BIOSYMBIOSIS design seminar brings to the discussion top Finnish and international names in bio-based design, some of them presenting their work for the very first time in Finland. The language of the seminar is English. Tuesday 24th May 2022 fryst vatten dedicated to the theme “Pathfinders for the Sustainable Future: Nature-Based Design Thinking, Research and Problem-Solving”. Esteemed biodesign expert, curator and author William Myers (Museum
