    Serraillier, born in London on 24 September , was the eldest of the four children of Lucien Serraillier (–) and Mary Kirkland Rodger (–). His father died in the Spanish flu pandemic.

    Serraillier was educated at Brighton College, a public school, and at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. He then taught English at Wycliffe College, Gloucestershire in –, Dudley Boys Grammar School, Worcestershire, in –, and Midhurst Grammar School, West Sussex, in –
