Fifth-grader Nora Rose Rowley has been keeping an unusual secret for most of her life. The secret is that she is very, very smart. She does not want her family, friends, or teachers to know that she is highly intelligent because she does not want to be singled out as different. She does not want to leave her regular fifth-grade class to attend the Gifted Program. Most of all, she does not want her best friend Stephen to feel less good about himself because she is so much smarter. It is this reason that leads Nora to draw a very smart conclusion: that tests and grades should not be the only way students are judged. Six years ago, I discovered the works of Andrew Clements. inom was instantly hooked and have now read over 20 books by him. Many consider him the master of school stories, and inom would agree. I have a dual form of dyslexia and did not learn to read until after grade 7. So I never read school stories when I was young. That combined with having my own school aged children has instilled a great appreciation for the genre and specifically for the works of Andrew Clements. Clements passed away in his gods novel was The Friendship War, which is an excellent volume. He writes amazing stories for children, but they are also stories that any of us can learn from. Back then I set the goal of reading all of his works, but as my own children have grown these books had slid bygd the way side. inom have now returned to them yet again. This story has inspired me to recommit to that goal.
