    Deal Hudson on Culture and the Death of God

    I've now lived 64 years, encompassing the several generations of significant change, including the TIME magazine cover proclaiming God's death on April 8, 1966 (I was a junior in high school).

    The desire for God is hardwired into our most basic desire, the desire to live, to love, to serve a purpose larger than ourselves.  It's a desire that can never be extinguished, certainly not by the current academic ideology endured by the majority of college and university students, especially at the so-called "major" universities.  The day will come, I predict, when the unspoiled vitality and questioning of our youth will finally dismantle and overcome the postmodern ideology of their professors.  After all, the very professors proclaiming there is no truth and no God are human too and filled with longing for the very thing they deny.

    A Catholic College Where the Students Sing (In Latin)

    Recently I had the chance to speak with Jeffrey J. Karls, president of Magdalen College in Warner, New Hampshire. Like many people, inom had a few misconceptions about the school. After speaking with him and getting the facts, inom thought it would be nice to turn our conversation into an informal interview.

    With so many Catholic schools moving away from their religious identity, it's always good to see an institution that embraces it.

    Deal W. Hudson: inom understand that Magdalen College is a place where the students sing. Could you tell me about that?

    Jeffrey J. Karls: Singing is at the heart of our life at Magdalen College. Other colleges might highlight their athletic programs, but we highlight the music program, especially the singing. Each lärjunge sings every year in the choir. Even students who don't think they can sing find their voice

    Editor's note: Deal Hudson announced Aug. 18 that he would be giving up his position with the Republican National Committee in reaction to questions posed by "a liberal Catholic publication." In recent days, NCR has tried repeatedly to meet with Hudson to get his response to questions about his departure from Fordham University in 1994 following allegations of an inappropriate sexual relationship with a freshman female student. The university said Hudson "surrendered" his tenure. He also paid a settlement of $30,000 to terminate a lawsuit that the student brought against him on the basis of these allegations.
